Being the son of a sporting legend must be difficult for any child to deal with, on the one hand you have the genes for greatness and on the other hand you have a the shadow of a legend constantly adding pressure to what you do.
There are many great sporting stars however who have not only lived under the pressure which the success of their fathers have put on them, but actually used that pressure to drive them on to great success in the world of sports. Let’s take a look at some of the sons who have emulated or surpassed the success of their fathers.
John and Jack Elway
Jack Elway was hotly tipped to have a highly successful NFL career during his time at college but all that changed when a knee injury forced the exciting Quarterback to end his career early. Instead of playing, Jack turned his hand to coaching and would go on to become one of the best college coaches and NFL scouts that the game has ever seen. Son John had a little more luck than his father and would go on to become one of the best QBs to play the game. John spent his entire career with the Denver Broncos and lead them to back to back Super Bowls as a player and another Super Bowl as general manager.
Ken Norton Senior and Junior
Ken Norton Snr. may not have played the beautiful game of football but given his physique and aggression, he probably could have. In fact, Norton was one of the finest boxers of his generation and became Heavyweight Champion during his Hall of Fame boxing career, after breaking the jaw of a certain Muhammed Ali and winning the bout to lift the belt. Son Ken junior decided that boxing was not for him and instead headed into the world of football as a line-backer. Norton junior would go on to become the first player in football history to win back-to-back-to-back Super Bowl championships with the Dallas Cowboys and later the San Francisco 49ers, Norton made it 4 Championships in 2014 whilst coaching the Seattle Seahawks.
The Mannings
Archie Manning was an exciting QB who would attract thousands to watch him play during his college days. After signing for the NFL, Manning had a solid career but there was always a feeling that he could’ve been better than he was. This was not a problem that was faced by sons Eli and Peyton who would go on to become regarded as the greatest QBs to ever play football. Between the brothers they have 4 Super Bowl rings and each has spent a career smashing records at both franchise and NFL level. The Mannings will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest families to have ever played the game and the two brothers will live long in the memory of NFL fans across the world.
