With the many environmental problems that we are facing today, one of the best things that we can do is to go green and to encourage others to do the same. No matter how big or small our contributions are, what is important is that we do something. Just like Louie Santaguida who is a condo developer and a visionary, we can also support green initiatives to help make our community better.
What does it mean to be green? To quote Louie Santaguida, “by prioritizing the environment, community will come.” This means that we all need to go back to the basics and aim for a safer and cleaner community not only for ourselves but for our loved ones as well.
Going green is also a practical option for those who want to live frugally, so it is like hitting two birds with one stone. You can be environment-friendly and budget-friendly too. There are so many things that you can do to go green, here are just a few options:
- Make use of your outdoor space and plant trees around the house. Plant them strategically and if possible, shade your air conditioning units to save up on energy. You can save up to $250 a year on cooling and heating! While you’re at it, plant a herb or vegetable garden and encourage the rest of your family to do the same. Not only will you help the environment, you can also save on grocery expenses by growing your own produce at home. You’re even ensuring that your veggies are fresh and free from any harmful chemicals.
- Use a reusabale bottle and stop buying the disposable ones. Just imagine the amount of water that you and your family drink on a daily basis and think of the plastic that you will save by using a reusable bottle. Make sure it’s BPA-free before purchasing!
- Whenever you do the groceries, bring your own bag. You won’t have to ask for a plastic bag from the market which you will eventually dispose of anyway.
- Turn off the lights and plug off electronic devices when not in use. Most homeowners think that they are not consuming as much electricity when they leave their television on standby mode but that is factually wrong. Energy is still consumed as long as the devices are plugged in.
- Utilize natural resources. Instead of turning on the lights, open the curtains and let the sunlight in. Instead of watching television, go out and enjoy the nice weather. Remember, the essence of going green is going back to basics so try to enjoy what nature can offer.
