For a lot of couples, their big day should be the full expression of who they are as people. Therefore, it’s not surprising that there are a growing number of weddings that break entirely from traditions and the pursuit of complete personal fulfillment from such an important event has given birth to unique wedding trends.
So, if you are putting together a modern wedding, you can take inspiration from some of these quirky trends. But what are they? Here are five that have been generating tremendous buzz in the wedding industry.
1. Non-human members of the entourage
Sometimes, couples feel that their big day should not be limited to their human connections. After all, some of the best friends a person can make are loyal four-legged animals such as dogs, pigs, and even a cow.
If your beloved furry family members have good behavior (maybe even better behavior than your little cousins or nieces and nephews), why not bestow upon it the title and job of ring-bearer or flower girl, instead? These non-human members of the entourage may be able to withstand the long ceremony better than tots.
2. Grandma or Grandpa as flower girl and ring bearer
This is such a cute trend going around, which was even featured by home and lifestyle magazine, Good Housekeeping. If a little sister or son can serve as maid of honor or best man, why shouldn’t Grandma and Grandpa be allowed to serve as flower girl and ring bearer? They’ll get the job done right and bring infectious joy to the event.
3. Non-religious wedding celebrant
A religious figure does not need to be the minister at your wedding. If you have family members or friends that you greatly look up to and are up for the task of performing the marital rites, assign them the job.
But, of course, they need to get ordained first. They can do that online, or you can seek help from your wedding event planner who is more knowledgeable of the requirements and process of becoming a wedding celebrant. A non-religious minister to officiate the wedding is a fantastic option for couples who do not identify with any religion.
4. Bridal wreaths
The bridal and bridal entourage’s bouquets have taken a more functional form. Instead of the conventional cluster of blooms, the flowers are formed into wreaths that look just as romantic and pretty, especially when they are embellished with beads and Swarovski crystals. Japanese florist Hanaya Tutahituji makes beautiful wreaths of both fresh and preserved flowers perfect for a wedding.
But, the advantage of these bridal wreaths is, when you or your bridesmaids are tired of holding them, you can put them on your head like a celebratory adornment. You can change up your look and free your hands for dancing or eating during the reception.
5. Wedding hats
Hats are nothing new for weddings. Back in the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s, it was rather common for the bride and groom to wear a hat to their big deal. The ladies donned berets, pillbox hats, and ornately shaped sinamay hats. Men, on the other hand, wore top hats and fedoras.
Wedding hats are making a strong comeback because why not? Hats are handsome pieces that look good whether your wedding is on the formal side or not. Wedding hats are practical too, especially for outdoor weddings because everybody can use some kind of protection from the sun.
6. “Anything but cake wedding cake”
A wedding without a traditional wedding cake may seem too Avante-Garde a concept. However, more and more couples are opting for wedding cake alternatives such as macarons, cinnamon rolls, donuts, and cream puff towers.
What many love about these “anything but cake wedding cakes” is it’s so much easier for everybody to partake of the offering. There’s no need to slice and butcher the appearance of a stunningly designed cake. Guests can just pluck out a piece for their treat of something sweet. Plus, they are better for people who are not really big fans of cake.
Quirky weddings are fun weddings. So, if you want the day you say I do to be a completely joyful affair, hopefully, you can take inspiration from the trends discussed above.
