4 Best Cities to Visit in Belgium

Belgium is a small European country located between the Netherlands on the north, Germany on the east, France and Luxembourg on the south and west. A narrow strip of the North Sea separates Belgium from the United Kingdom. It is the country of museums, lace, chocolate and beer, the ancient monuments and other attractions of which are known all over the world.

Being in Belgium, you surely should find the time for the well-known Belgian trio – Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp.

It is worth beginning with a visit of the center of the political and financial interests’ intersection, and the capital of the whole European Union — Brussels. While sightseeing, it is better to choose car rentals at Brussels airport. One of the most picturesque places of the capital – the Grand Place — is not only the biggest and amazing square of Brussels, but also one of the most beautiful ones in the world. Brussels is full of architectural and historical sights:  the Royal Palace, the Cathedral of St. Michael, and the City Hall with a 90-meter tower. Very popular is the museum Mini-Europe, which collects models of famous European landmarks on a smaller scale. But, of course, Belgium attractions are not limited to one’s capital.

After visiting the heart of Belgium, you should necessary go to Antwerp. You can easily overcome a distance of 54 km considering the beautiful scenery. Start with the main square (Grote Markt), where are the Town Hall and the Brabo Fountain. You should visit the right coast of Scheldt and to glance at the Burg Steen castle, which was called “a stone.” Like most impregnable fortresses, Steen Castle has long been used as a prison. Now here there is the National Maritime Museum with the folklore monument (Long Vapper) on the main square.

Then follow surely to Ghent – just 56 km separates you from this wonderful city. In Ghent there are many interesting places, among which are the ancient medieval castles, towers, cathedrals and museums. Ghent is famous for its annual festivals, especially picturesque Flemish festivals, which take place in October. Surely, visit the Castle of counts -Gravensteen. In due time here were placed a textile factory, the court of Flanders and the prison. Now you can visit the Castle Museum of weapons and the Museum of justice.

The next city is Bruges, which seems to be frozen in medieval times. This city is ideal for a saturated trip and for a romantic weekend. Here you can see the works of such great artists as Memling, Van Eyck or Michelangelo. To reach the legendary city won’t take a lot of time – 50 km and here you are. Since the Belgian chocolate is considered one of the best in the world, there is a museum of chocolate Choco-Story in Bruges in the castle of the XVII century.

The whole trip around the most famous historical centers of Belgium makes approximately 160 km. To feel the flavor of the country you should travel on it, and then you will find your favorite place.
