How to Convince an Old Person to Wear Adult Diapers

Raymond@opencomparison.org' By Raymond Bilger Dec6,2016

Adult diapers are generally coined as something negative to 20+-year-olds. They think wearing something like a diaper would damage their social reputation as a person. They think that diapers are only meant for babies and not for people with thinking capacity.

As a person ages, their control over their body weakens. They may find it hard to hold their pee in for longer periods of time than when they’re younger. It’s usually hard to convince adults or seniors to wear these super absorbent garments because they think that they are not babies.

If you are experiencing troubles with telling adults to wear adult diapers, here are some tips in convincing your relative or someone to wear one:

Never Use the Word Diaper

The term “diaper”is often associated with babies. It’s because diapers are used by those who aren’t potty trained and can’t make it to bathrooms to relieve themselves. So when you tell an adult to wear diapers, they’d often shun the idea and even cause a commotion. Adults don’t like the idea of being treated a baby. To make them actually wear one, make sure to NOT use the word “diaper” in front of their faces. Use a different term, let’s say, a brief, pad or panty.

Take a Trip to the Doctor

Most elderly adults are stubborn when it comes to their health. They tend to escape any looming medical trip to the doctor’s clinic the very chance they get it. Despite all of this, it’s important to have them checked by a doctor or a specialist. Their diagnosis may help in your situation.

Incontinence or the ability to not control their pee may happen to every one of us in the future. If an adult suffers from incontinence due to a medical condition or deteriorating health due to age, it’s important to have them checked by a specialist. Wearing adult diapers will most likely be prescribed by the doctors and will assure them that there’s nothing to be embarrassed about when wearing such things.

Talk to Someone Else

Adults who suffer from incontinence won’t accept the fact that they can’t control their pee. You, as their caregiver, it’s best to be careful with your words around them. Adults won’t be able to handle the fact that they are peeing everywhere when someone points it out to their face.

Talking to an old friend or doctor may help when the situation calls for it. It’s best to have someone that isn’t related to the adult at all, tell stories of how other people also suffer incontinence issues. It may bring their defense down just a little bit, enough for you to convince them into wearing those super absorbent pants.

Gently Tell Them About Incontinence

Most elderly adults will have their sense of smell not as sharp as they used to back in the day. If they are having incontinence, it’s best to tell them as gently as possible. It’s something that they’re dreading when they get older. Incontinence doesn’t only affect them but to others also. Gently tell them about their situation and recommend appropriate steps in dealing with it. Having it explained to them may convince them to wear adult diapers so as to not be a burden to those who are taking care of them and spare them the embarrassment from other people.
